The word “prophecy” evokes mystery. It stirs the imagination with visions of cryptic sayings often misunderstood. Or ominous dreams in dire need of interpretation before a looming, but preventable disaster. Or a wise old sage speaking calmly with a certain knowledge beyond the realm of Man. Hollywood and popular books have sold this idea of prophecy. For many Christians, it is the only definition they know. While there are elements of truth in these descriptions, biblical prophecy is altogether different. Let’s look to the Scriptures and define what is and what isn’t prophecy.
